Why does the Catholic Church oppose “once saved, always saved“?

My understanding is that Jesus saved us all by opening the door, showing the way, narrow as it is, for us to follow if we wish. God respects us too much to override our desire to go some other way. God loves us - He doesn't force us. So: once shown the way we always know the way, we only have to go the way.

Because we live in time and can change our minds. Because we can't be saved against our will. Because salvation is a gift we are free to reject.
